Katonah is not THAT close Rob. I mapquested it. It's about 45mins from NYC and 1:30mins from me.

It is free though. Better than seeing that same group at The Blue Note or Village Vanguard for $45. I'm not big fan of John Benitez's jazz playing.

I may go, are you going?

Ok, Rob you owe me $80.
Just joking. You were sadly misinformed about this show.
This was a big deal. A benefit for The Katonah Public Library, and John Scofields debut of his new amazing trio. It was not free.

It was $40 a ticket, and I brought my wife.

It was completely worth it. They were in trio format, Hass had a jazz kit. 12"x8" rack and 14"x14" Floor, an 18"x14" Bass Drum, and a 5.5 Brass Snare. All Yamaha MCAN, tuned very high like Roy Haynes.

They began with "My Romance", medium swing, beautiful. They went right into a blazing "Four" by Miles Davis. Up swing, and Hass traded ridiculous eights. One of them was like the 32nd hand and foot ala Vinnie Colaiuta from the BRMS dvd. Brilliant.
After that they played a tune from "Meant To Be" one of my favorite J.S albums. It's called "Chariots". A slinky greasy second line groove, which Hass killed. Then they began to funk out with John's classic jam band anthem "Hottentot". Again, Hass went from Be-Bop, to Zagaboo, to Clyde Stubblefield. A master at work. They proceeded with "Georgia On My Mind", in jazz ballad form and then broke into clave with "What I Say". For an encore they played the super funky "Sticks and Stones".

What a night. Serious jazz, and serious funk. It doesn't get better than what I saw tonight. They played beautifully together, with many amazing moments of musical telepathy and cohesevness.

Thanks for letting us know Rob. You still owe me $80!

The great thing about this band is that it satisfies everyone. The musicians were orgasming at the amazing technique and musicality of these top musicians, and yet the wives and girlfriends were dancing in the aisles during the funk numbers. Everyone was happy.

Yeah, we do get the best in jazz nightly. Sorry Groove! I thought it was a free concert. I wish I could have made it. I got a last minute gig in town.
